In an epic stare down between SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and its biggest basketball brand, Kentucky blinked first.
Former Missouri star Mark Mitchell, who had committed to Kentucky earlier this month after receiving an injunction to play the 2026–27 season, is headed back to Mizzou for his fifth season of eligibility in a stunning twist announced Monday. The move came after concern from Kentucky that the Wildcats were set to face significant sanctions from the SEC if Mitchell played for them as a result of the league’s intraconference transfer rules, a source familiar with the situation tells Sports Illustrated. Instead, Mitchell opted for the safer move of returning to Missouri, where he and the Tigers should face far less scrutiny from the SEC league office if he suits up this season. Monday was the deadline for students to add classes for the fall semester at Missouri, so the clock was ticking on Mitchell to flip his choice if he wanted a chance to play during the first month of the season.
