Why Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo is out of Portugal squad to face Switzerland

Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has been left out of the Portugal squad that will travel to Switzerland on Sunday.

The attacker scored twice in the 4-0 reverse victory in the Nations League last week, but will not feature in his country’s final match of the season. The 37-year-old is not thought to be injured but is instead being given a rest.

Wolves midfielder Joao Moutinho and Borussia Dortmund’s Raphael Guerreiro also miss the clash. Portugal head coach Fernando Santos explained why the trio were absent in a press conference on Saturday.

"There are no physical problems. It is normal management,” he said. "It wouldn't make sense to have 26 players travelling if we can only play 23. It fell to these players to miss out, that's all."

Ronaldo previously said he wishes to play into his 40s and knows to do so, he may have to rest more frequently. He played 39 times in his homecoming season at United, which is the fewest number of club games he has featured in since the 2009/10 campaign.
