Why major UK mobile networks have experienced a surge in traffic

  • England 's World Cup victory against DR Congo led to unprecedented surges in mobile network traffic for EE and O2 , with the 5pm kick-off coinciding with many fans' evening commute.
  • EE's network experienced an all-time peak during the game, 42 per cent above average Wednesday levels, while O2 recorded its biggest mobile traffic spike in history, exceeding previous records by 20.4 per cent.
  • Mobile traffic was 27.7 per cent higher than an average week, according to O2, with BBC iPlayer traffic surging by 380 per cent compared to a typical weekday afternoon.
  • The match also significantly boosted the high street, with overall footfall rising by 7.4 per cent week on week, driven by a 15 per cent increase on high streets, according to data from MRI Software.
  • London saw a substantial impact, with office-dense locations experiencing a 31.7 per cent uplift between 2pm and 5pm, and overall footfall increasing by 46.7 per cent week on week.
