Why Liverpool vs Leeds United is not on TV despite initial BT Sport pick

Liverpool have the chance to cut Manchester City’s lead at the top of the Premier League table when they take on Leeds United at Anfield tonight.

The Reds came from behind to beat Norwich City on Saturday afternoon before City were beaten at home to Tottenham Hotspur later on in the day.

Thanks to their win, and City’s defeat, the Reds moved within six points of Pep Guardiola’s side, with their game in hand on the league leaders coming tonight against Leeds.

The two sides were due to meet at Anfield on Boxing Day, but the game was postponed a couple of days before it was due to take place after Covid cases in the Leeds camp.

The Premier League fixture was due to be screened live on BT Sport when the original date was set for December 26 - but tonight’s rearranged game will not be shown live on TV.

BT Sport broadcast Champions League matches in the UK and tonight’s game takes place on the same night as two fixtures in Europe’s premier club competition.

Atletico Madrid welcome Manchester United to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, while Benfica take on Ajax at the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica.

As a result, the Champions League takes preference over domestic fixtures when it comes to TV scheduling meaning both of those ties will be available to watch over the Reds.

BT Sport also opted to broadcast Crystal Palace’s trip to take on Tottenham to fill their TV schedule on Boxing Day when Liverpool’s game with Leeds was first postponed.

UEFA have relaxed their usual guidelines preventing domestic games from coinciding with European cup competitions as the Premier League looks to clear their fixture backlog.

But top-flight games cannot start at the time as Champions League ones as UEFA do not want a direct clash of matches.

Both Champions League ties kick-off at 8pm tonight, with Liverpool’s games starting 15 minutes earlier, and Burnley vs Tottenham and Watford vs Crystal Palace both starting at 7.30pm.

While it is also worth noting that the kick-off time for each game is still determined by a host of factors, including the view of both clubs and the local police.
