Why Kylian Mbappe could be handed World Cup punishment by FIFA ahead of potential England clash

Kylian Mbappe has impressed at the World Cup so far. The PSG superstar has three goals in two games at the tournament in Qatar and is a major reason why France have already qualified for the knockout stages.

The 23-year-old scored in France's 4-1 win over Australia before netting twice in a 2-1 win over Denmark on Saturday. The close-range finish against Denmark - coming four minutes from time - secured all three points for France and ensured Didier Deschamps' side are into the last 16.

However, news emerged on Sunday evening that Mbappe could be sanctioned by FIFA after refusing to speak to the media for the second successive game at the World Cup.

According to the Daily Mirror, the tricky forward refused to stop and speak to the media in the mixed zone after France's games against Australia and Denmark. According to the report, that means he and the French Football Federation (FFF) are set to be hit with a fine from FIFA.

After Mbappe failed to speak to the press after France's first World Cup match, the FFF was warned that the same thing must not happen again. It's said that both France and Mbappe are aware of rumours surrounding the superstar's future at PSG, and it's believed that if the 23-year-old was to speak to reporters he would likely be asked about that very subject.

That could explain why Mbappe has not yet appeared at a press conference throughout France’s stay in Qatar. Mbappe's future has been a talking point for a while and Real Madrid, Chelsea and Liverpool are among the clubs believed to be interested in the former AS Monaco man.

The report goes on to say that it's expected Mbappe and the FFF would split the cost of any fine handed out. It's highly unlikely that FIFA would impose a game ban for the France international, but if this were to happen then it could impact England, who could face Deschamps' side in the quarter-finals, depending on where England and France finish in their respective groups.
