Why KKK propaganda was found in a Mississippi government office

  • Workers at the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS) discovered full Ku Klux Klan regalia and various KKK documents while clearing out a closet at their office.
  • The discovery, made during preparations for a building move, included a pamphlet titled 'The Ugly Truth about Martin Luther King', recruitment materials, meeting notes, ledgers, and a KKK handbook.
  • Some of the materials, found in a small blue suitcase, dated back to the 1960s and also contained news clippings about the Freedom Riders protests.
  • The artefacts have been handed over to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) for preservation and research, with processing expected to take months.
  • DPS Commissioner Sean Tindell stated that preserving these items helps ensure future generations are not misled by such hate, while MDAH noted their significance for understanding 1960s KKK activities in Mississippi.
