Why Kate, Meghan, George and Charlotte didn't attend vigil for the Queen tonight

As the Queen's beloved grandchildren stand beside their grandmother's coffin in Westminster Hall, many royal fans may have noticed Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle are not among the young generation of royals not present, nor Prince George or Princess Charlotte.

It is understood that most of the spouses of the Queen's grandchildren - including the Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Sussex - are not in attendance to allow the cousins to come together on their own to mourn.

Mike Tindall, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and Jack Brooksbank are also among the royal spouses not taking part tonight, and they will remain at their respective homes in Windsor. The 15-minute vigil lets mourners continue to file past the Queen lying-in-state, while the royal grandchildren honour their 'Grannie' in person.

Prince William can be seen standing at the head of the coffin with Prince Harry at the foot, both dressed in their military uniforms at the "King's request".

Her Majesty's remaining eight grandchildren - Zara Tindall, Peter Philips, Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, Lady Louise and James, Viscount Severn - are standing around the middle of the coffin.

All royal cousins are wearing black "morning coat and dark formal dress with decorations" to honour the longstanding royal tradition.

A statement from Buckingham Palace yesterday said: "The grandchildren, at the King's invitation, are very keen to pay their respects - just as their parents are doing the evening before."

Yesterday evening, King Charles and his siblings, Princess Anne, Prince Edward and Prince Andrew stood vigil beside the Queen's coffin, while members of the extended royal family looked on.

Watching the vigil included other members of the royal family including the Queen Consort, Countess of Wessex, four of the Queen’s grandchildren and their spouses – Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, and Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips – and members of the wider royal family.

All of the Queen's grandchildren and their spouses will be present at the Queen's funeral on Monday, which is expected to see the Abbey filled with over 2,000 guests.

A two minute silence will be held and the national anthem will then be played to signal the closing of the service.

After the funeral, the King and members of the royal family will walk behind the Queen's coffin to Wellington Arch before it is driven to Windsor on the state hearse.

The Queen will then be transferred to Windsor Castle where the late monarch will be laid to rest alongside Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, in King George VI's chapel.

The chapel is also the resting place of the Queen's father, King George VI, the Queen's mother and sister, Princess Margaret.
