Why is the Piccadilly tube line partly closing in August and which routes are affected?

The Piccadilly line is to be partly closed for more than a fortnight in August, which will cause travel disruption across north and west London.

During the 16-day closure, five central London stations will have no Tube service at all. Trains will start and terminate at Wood Green and normal services will not resume until Monday September 2.

In addition to the disruption for commuters, this will cause difficulties for many Arsenal fans heading to the Emirates Stadium for the Gunners’ first two Premier League home games of the season, against Wolves on August 17 and Brighton on August 31.

Many Arsenal fans travel to the match on the Piccadilly line via Arsenal or Finsbury Park stations. Both will remain open but the part-closures of the northern section of the line will place additional strain on the Victoria line at Highbury and Islington and Finsbury Park.

During the work – which is being carried out in preparation for the new fleet of Piccadilly line trains arriving from 2025 – there will be a reduced service on some other parts of the line due to there being fewer trains in service.

Here is everything we know.

When is the line partly closing?

The line, one of the busiest on the London Underground, will partly close from 6am on Saturday August 17. Services will start to resume on the morning of Sunday September 1.

Which parts of the Piccadilly line are closing?

The line will be shut between Wood Green and Cockfosters, and between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge.

Transport for London (TfL) said the full line, which runs from Heathrow to Cockfosters, will receive 94 new trains from next year and they will be the first Underground trains to be fitted with air-conditioning.

The part-closures, on weekends in July and August and the 16-day stretch ending on September 1, will be covered by rail replacement buses.

Which routes will be affected?

Part of the Piccadilly line will be closed in full for the two-week period.

From 00.30 to 6am on Saturday August 17, there will be no service between King’s Cross and Cockfosters.

Then from 6am Saturday August 17 until the start of the service on Sunday September 1, there will be no service between Wood Green and Cockfosters.

During this closure some stations that will have no Tube service at all: these are Cockfosters, Oakwood, Southgate, Arnos Grove and Bounds Green.

There will be a reduced service to Heathrow Terminal 4, running every 15 to 20 minutes. Passengers are advised to use the Elizabeth line instead.

There will be a reduced service on some other parts of the Piccadilly line but a normal service will also resume on Monday September 2.
