Why is Saudi Arabia called KSA on TV for World Cup?

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is well under way in Qatar, as teams from around the world take to the biggest stage in world football. The tournament takes place amid a wave of controversies around human rights and the treatment of migrant workers.

The competition has already seen some dramatic scenes following Ecuador’s disallowed goal just minutes into the opening game against the hosts. England netted six goals in their emphatic victory against Group B opponents Iran on Monday, while Gareth Bale salvaged a point for Wales with a late penalty against USA.

The tournament continues on Tuesday, with four games set to take place across Groups C and D. The first game of the day see’s Lionel Messi’s Argentina face Saudia Arabia in the first Group C clash of the competition, as the PSG superstar makes a last ditch attempt at winning a World Cup before he retires from international duty.

Argentina are ranked third in FIFA’s world rankings, behind Belgium and Brazil, while Saudia Arabia are ranked 51. The underdogs will have something to prove following the 2018 World Cup, in which they bagged their first win at the tournament for 24 years beating Egypt 2-1.

The middle eastern team is referred to with the abbreviation 'KSA' on television graphics. This is because the country’s official name is Kingdom of Saudia Arabia, which is shortened to KSA to fit in the small space allocated to the game’s scoreline on TV broadcasts.

The Saudis made a short trip to the tournament, as they share a border with Qatar in the east. Following their opening game at the Lusail Iconic Stadium – around 14 miles north of the capital Doha – they head to the Education City Stadium to face Poland on Saturday.
