Why is Lurpak butter so expensive? Price rises explained as costs continue to soar

The cost of living crisis continues to impact millions of households across the country, as rising inflation levels has seen increased costs across supermarket shelves.

Food prices have been steadily increasing for a few months now and they are set to rise further, as shoppers have been warned that their annual food shopping bills could increase to £380 this year.

One grocery essential that has had everyone talking over the past few weeks has been a tub of Lurpak Butter, which is being sold for over £9 in some supermarkets. Other supermarkets have been seen selling the popular butter for around £5 for a 500g tub.

The beloved Danish-owned brand has gone viral on social media recently, as the price hikes "summed up the cost of living crisis" for many shoppers. And, if you have been left wondering why the household staple has seen a huge increase recently, then we have all the information that you need.

Why is Lurpak suddenly so expensive?

The BBC reports that the butter brand has increased the price of their products to help make sure that dairy farmers receive a "fair deal".

Lurpak's owner, Arla Foods, revealed in a recent statement that dairy farmers have been losing money due to the rising cost of fertiliser and fuel.

Commenting on the price hikes, a spokesperson for the Danish brand said: "Prices on the shelves have had to rise in recent months."

We understand that recent inflation in food price is hitting many households really hard right now.

Unfortunately, our farmers are facing a similar situation with prices for the feed, fertiliser and fuel they need to produce milk, all rising significantly in recent months.

While we don't set the prices on the shelves, we do work closely with the retailers to ensure our farmers receive a fair price for the milk they produce."

Supermarkets have also said that manufacturing costs are the reason for the recent price hikes. A spokesperson for Sainsbury's has said: ""The price of products will be influenced by a range of factors, including manufacturer's costs, and we are doing all we can to mitigate rising costs where we can."
