Why is BBC X-Ray ending? Details as show says goodbye after 22 years

BBC consumer show X-Ray will air its last show tonight [Monday, March 7] at 8pm. The Welsh programme, which sought justice for consumers, first aired in 2001 and has been presented by journalist Lucy Owen since 2007.

Lucy announced the news of X-Ray's axing earlier this month and admitted she was "very sad" to be saying goodbye to it. Taking to Twitter she told her followers: "I'm very sad but will always be enormously proud of the work we’ve done getting your money back, exposing rogues and bringing criminals to justice, all thanks to every dedicated and committed member of the team over our 22 years. Thank you @BBCXRay."

The presenter also shared an emotional post on the BBC Wales show's last day of filming. Sharing a teary selfie on March 21, she wrote: "What a day. Just managed to get through the last @BBCXRay links.

But when is the last episode and why is the show ending? Here's everything you need to know.

Why is BBC X-Ray ending?

According to BBC Wales, the decision came as growth in its online services meant "tough editorial and financial decisions" were needed in order to grow its digital content.

At the time of the announcement, a BBC Wales spokesman said: "We are very proud of the work X-Ray has done the years on behalf of audiences, and will ensure that its legacy, strong consumer journalism, lives on in our BBC Wales news coverage. We will continue to throw a spotlight on the sort of issues that were raised by the programme."

When is the last BBC X-Ray episode?

The last ever BBC X-Ray episode will air on BBC One and BBC Wales at 8pm on Monday, March 27. An official tweet on the BBC X-Ray page reads: "It's goodbye from all of us here at @BBCXRay!

"Thank you to everyone who has got in touch with us over the years, we have enjoyed helping every single one of you. Tonight we take a look back over the last 22 years of X-Ray... Don't miss it! 8pm @BBCOne @BBCWales." For more showbiz and television stories get our newsletter here.
