Why FA Cup matches are midweek with Man United vs West Ham & Sheffield United vs Tottenham

The FA Cup fifth round continues on Wednesday night with four fixtures being played and among them are Sheffield United vs Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United against West Ham United.

Spurs travel to Bramall Lane to take on the Championship promotion pushers having won five of their last seven games in all competitions, including victories over Chelsea and Manchester City in the Premier League. West Ham, meanwhile, secured a morale-boosting 4-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the weekend.

The fifth-round stage has become unofficially recognised as the latter stages of the competition since 2018/19, with the scrapping of replays. Then, with the fixture congestion bought about by the introduction of a winter break in the 2019/20 season, midweek matches became the norm in the fifth round and has nothing to do with the World Cup this campaign.
