Why English Teacher Is The Latest Queer Comedy Series Getting Rave Reviews Online

In today’s age of streaming, we’re blessed to have a plethora of new shows to watch every week. But with more choice in content comes extra challenges for television creators. Namely, making it much more difficult for brand-new television series to break through the noise and make an impact. So, when one does, it’s a big ‘ol win. This week, the show making a buzz online is FX’s new comedy series English Teacher.

English Teacher stars American actor and comedian Brian Jordan Alvarez as Evan, a gay high school English teacher trying to make it through the school year. He loves his job and is wholeheartedly dedicated to his students. But Evan’s year gets off to a rough start after he breaks up with his on-and-off-again boyfriend and former colleague Malcolm (Jordan Firstman) and finds out that he’s in trouble with the principal of the school after a parent saw him smooch Malcolm in front of students from months ago.

Although he feels like he’s being targeted because of his sexuality, he promises not to date any more faculty members. That’s all well and good for Evan… until a handsome new teacher named Harry (Langston Kerman) joins the staff and takes a liking to him.

In true sitcom style, Evan is joined by a range of hilarious, oddball characters. His fellow teachers — like his best bud, history teacher Gwen Sanders (Stephanie Koenig) — are as politically incorrect but well-meaning as you’d expect. And of course, there is a host of students busting Evan’s balls over all sorts of woke issues in a way reflective of the ever-changing landscape of what is deemed appropriate in 2024.

What do people think of English Teacher?

English Teacher has been racking up some pretty excellent reviews online. It’s currently sitting at 97 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes with viewers praising the new series for great character development, being effortlessly funny and being an incredibly enjoyable show.

On X, formerly Twitter, the reviews were even better. Countless people said the series made them laugh out loud — which I’d argue is HUGE praise — and others said the show made them feel seen.

Where can I watch English Teacher in Australia?

All eight episodes of English Teacher season one are exclusively streaming in Australia on Disney+. The series was released in Australia on September 2.

Happy watching everybody!!!
