Why Do Pickup Trucks Cost Almost as Much as Luxury Cars Now?

Why Do Pickup Trucks Cost Almost as Much as Luxury Cars Now?

Pickup trucks have quietly moved into luxury-car territory, especially once buyers leave the basic work-truck trims behind. In August 2026, the average transaction price for a full-size pickup reached $67,446, according to Kelley Blue Book. That compares with $50,089 for the average new vehicle across all segments.

That $67,446 figure creates an odd shopping experience. A buyer can walk onto a truck lot with roughly the money needed for a Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan and still find plenty of pickups that cost more. The 2026 E-Class starts at $65,200, while upscale trucks can climb well beyond $80,000.
