Today is one of the most important days of the year, for our self-important pets... it's International Cat Day.
Cats can be much harder to understand than dogs; they're independent, less demanding of attention but can be slightly suspicious.
However, our feline friends have been pets for thousands of years.
In ancient Egypt cats were worshipped and thought to be most special of all the animals Egyptians held in high regard.
They believed cats were magical creatures, capable of bringing good luck to the people who housed them.
These days, cats still act like they should be worshipped, and maybe they should?
But what about their odd characteristics? Why do cats rub up against you? We take a look at the reasons behind their funny furry behaviour.
Why do cats rub against you?
According to the RSPCA, when a cat is nestling up against you, rubbing its head and body on your legs, it is showing signs of affection.
With its touch, the cat is sharing its scent on you and in turn making you part of the family.
The RSPCA explained: "Cats use scent to identify each other, recognise family members and mark their 'safe zones' within an environment."
So next time you feel a purring paw-footed pet rubbing its head on your leg, just know they're taking you in as one of their own.
Why do cats meow?
The RSPCA also revealed that meowing can be for attention.
Yes, it mostly means they want some sort of food, but it can also be if they want to be stroked or played with.
A vocal cat means they want more attention.
Do cats purring really mean they're happy?
Yes, it can - but not always!
The animal charity revealed that purring is a sign of "happiness and contentment".
However, sometimes a cat can purr when it is scared or anxious, to try and calm itself down.
The cat equivalent to our "think happy thoughts, think happy thoughts".
Why do cats lick people?
Cats are self-grooming creatures, meaning they keep themselves clean.
So when your kitten seems to be licking you too, they are just trying to give you a wash.
Although the rough tongue of a cat might not feel very pleasant, it is your pet's way of showing it cares.
A grooming session is a sign your cat is trying to bond with you.
Other weird cat body language
Has your cat ever looked at you and blinked slowly?
Well if it has, you are one very lucky owner.
Apparently, when a cat makes eye contact and blinks slowly it is a sign of trust.
The RSPCA has compared it to a human blowing a kiss.
They say, a cat blinking slowly means “I love and trust you”.
However, be wary of a cat that's giving a wide-eyed stare, as this is a threatening sign.
Wide-eyed stares aside, it turns out cats might just be more affectionate than we give them credit for.
