Why did the Spice Girls break up as Mel B teases 2023 tour telling fans 'we are back'

It seems that the Spice Girls are set for a massive reunion after Mel B appears to have confirmed that they're going back on tour.

Spice Girl fans were sent into a frenzy earlier this week when the group's official Twitter account revealed that they were releasing a 25th anniversary edition of their hit 1997 album Spiceworld, including demos, unreleased live recordings, new remixes and unreleased tracks.

Taking to Instagram to share the news of the anniversary album, Mel B, aka Scary Spice, told her fans "We are back".

She also appeared to confirm that the girl group would be embarking on a tour next year as she used the hashtag #spicetour2023, captioning the post: "To ALL our fans get ready for #spiceworld25 yippppeeee its here at long last!!!! Boom #girlpower #foryou #friendshipneverends #spicetour2023".

The group last reunited for a tour back in 2019, but Victoria Beckham didn't join Mel B, Geri Horner, Emma Bunton and Melanie C on the tour.

As it looks like they could be getting ready to spice up our lives once again, here's why the Spice Girls split in the first place and whether Victoria will be joining them this time around.

Why did the Spice Girls break up?

The Spice Girls never actually officially broke up. In 2000 the group announced that they were going on an indefinite hiatus, however they insisted to fans that it wasn't the end of the Spice Girls.

The break came after cracks started to show in the group when ginger spice Geri Halliwell, now Geri Horner, suddenly left in 1998 — just days before the Spice Girls were set to embark on their sell-out US tour.

At the time, Geri sighted "differences" as the reason she was leaving the band, saying in a statement: "“This is a message to the fans. Sadly, I would like to confirm that I have left the Spice Girls.

“This is because of differences between us, I am sure the group will continue to be successful and I wish them all the best.”

However, it was later revealed that Geri was going through some heartbreaking personal issues at the time.

The singer had been suffering from an eating disorder, later telling Oprah's Where Are They Now: "I started being bulimic and no one would notice it because your body weight stays pretty much the same. It's bloody dangerous."

She also later revealed that she left because she felt that she "didn't belong" anymore.

Speaking in the 2007 documentary Giving You Everything, Geri said: “I remember knowing in my heart in the days approaching that I was going to leave, and the song Viva Forever I was standing there thinking ‘Oh my god, this is the last time I’m going to perform this with them’. I’d given all I could.

“I felt like I didn’t belong anymore. They didn’t need me anymore, really, and I definitely felt very redundant.”

The other members of the band had no idea what she was going through at the time and were shocked by Geri's exit, particularly Mel B, who later told US TV host Larry King: "When Geri left the group, it was bad.

"She left on my birthday and didn't tell anybody. She didn't show up. We had the American part of the tour to continue."

Eventually, each of the Spice Girls began to focus on their solo careers.

Mel B went on to release solo albums Hot and L.A State of Mind and Emma Bunton released three solo albums, A Girl Lime Me, Free Me and Life in Mono.

Victoria Beckham also continued to make music, releasing her first and only solo album in 2001, and despite leaving the band Geri Halliwell released three of her own albums too.

Mel C continues to make music, having released a total of eight solo albums, with her latest album coming out in 2020.

Will Victoria Beckham join the Spice Girls on tour?

The band previously kept their promise that it wouldn't be the end of the Spice Girls when they reunited back in 2019, with Geri returning to preform with them despite quitting 21 years earlier.

However, their was one Spice Girl noticeably absent from the 2019 reunion — Posh Spice.

Victoria Beckham made the decision not to join the rest of the group, explaining to Vogue Germany: "It took me a lot of courage not to go on tour with the Spice Girls again, but to be the one who says: 'You know, I'm not doing it because things feel different now than they used to'".

She went on to add: "I'd rather concentrate on my family and my company."

But ever since their 2019 tour Mel B has been adamant that she's going to get the whole group together — including Victoria — for a 2023 tour, and now it looks like it's really happening.

Scary spice told OK! Magazine last year: “We’re constantly talking about it. The girls have had meetings and it’s something we all passionately want to do."

But Victoria, who is now a successful fashion designer, is still reported to suffer from "confidence issues" and sources have said that she is feeling apprehensive about a comeback.

A source told New Magazine: “She is nervous because she knows the whole world will be watching her,

“Posh Spice and Victoria Beckham are two different people now, and that is how it has been for a long time.

“She has a different image now and she doesn’t want to embarrass herself.”
