Why Conor Gallagher trained but Bukayo Saka and Harry Kane didn’t as England prepare for USA test

After comfortably winning their opening game of the 2022 Qatar World Cup yesterday, England's attention immediately diverts to Friday's clash with USA as Gareth Southgate's side look to earn their place in the knockout stages of the competition.

The Three Lions were too good for Iran and romped to a 6-2 victory to go top of Group B with an emphatic display in Doha. Goals from Jude Bellingham, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford, Jack Grealish and a Bukayo Saka brace ruled out a potential early tournament slip-up against Carlos Queiroz's side.

It's a quick turnaround for England as they have three days in their Doha training complex to prepare for their meeting with the USA in Al-Khor on Friday. Gregg Berhalter's side were held to a 1-1 draw by Wales last night after Gareth Bale's penalty ruled out Timothy Weah's first-half strike.

England took to the training pitch on Tuesday morning as the process of recovery and preparation got underway in the scorching temperatures in the Middle East. However, the players that started the win over Iran were left indoors to complete the recovery whilst the remaining 13 players took to the field.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher joined the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson and Ben White in taking part in the session while Eric Dier, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford joined them after playing for only 20 minutes.

After being forced off with an ankle injury yesterday, Kane joined his fellow starters in their recovery from Monday indoors. The Tottenham striker was seen limping through the mixed zone after the win with strapping around his right ankle after a challenge from Morteza Pouraliganji.

It's expected that the 11 starters will join the rest of the camp in training tomorrow as preparation intensifies for their second group game. However, the official England Twitter page confirmed that Leicester City midfielder James Maddison continues his rehabilitation indoors after being excluded from the squad on Monday.
