Why Colts QB Anthony Richardson had nasal procedure done

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson did not participate in Monday’s training camp practice after he underwent a procedure to correct his nasal septum.

The Colts don’t expect the No. 4 overall pick to be out long with a potential return coming just a day later at Tuesday’s practice. The procedure was done so that Richardson could breathe better.

Head coach Shane Steichen doesn’t expect it to be a lengthy absence at all.

“Obviously, you guys didn’t see Anthony (Richardson) out there practicing today – he had a little procedure done on his nose just so he can breathe better,” Steichen told the media Monday. “We had to get it done and yesterday was the off day so we got it done. He should be back tomorrow, and if he’s not, he’ll be back the next day. It’s nothing serious.”

Steichen also mentioned to the media that it was a pre-existing condition Richardson has dealt with, and the Colts wanted to get it done during an off day.

They felt it would be better to get Richardson going at the start of camp rather than have him miss a day or two at the beginning.

“It’s just so he can breathe better. We just said, ‘Hey, shoot let’s just…’ We didn’t want him to come in and not start camp, you know what I mean? Let’s let him get into camp and do it on the off day,” Steichen said.

The rookie quarterback has had a strong start to camp as he’s split reps with veteran Gardner Minshew for the role on the first-team offense. They are likely to continue splitting reps until the preseason games give us more of an indication of where Richardson is at in his development.
