Why Chelsea are wearing yellow kit in FA Cup final vs Liverpool

The oldest cup competition in world football reaches its annual conclusion this afternoon.

Chelsea and Liverpool will play out the FA Cup final under the Wembley arch for the chance to lift the famous trophy high into the skies over London.

The Stamford Bridge club will not be wearing their traditional blue home kit for the occasion, despite there being no obvious colour clash with Liverpool's red shirts. Instead, the Londoners will be sporting their all-yellow strip for the showpiece event.

The decision appears to be a nod to their successes when donning yellow in the competition in the past.

The Blues, who won the competition in 2009 wearing a similar strip, wore their away kit in the semi-final, which saw Thomas Tuchel's team cruise past Crystal Palace 2-0. The last time the west Londoners wore a yellow away strip was in the 2018/19 season, though the home kit was worn in the FA Cup triumph over Manchester United.

And when wearing the blue shirts in the recent finals against Arsenal and Leicester City, they lost both matches. Therefore the Blues have opted for yellow this afternoon in hope for a repeat of their FA Cup final win over Merseysiders Everton while wearing those colours back in 2009.

Chelsea star Mason Mount said of the yellow kit: "When you look over the years, you always remember the yellow kits on our heroes that made an impact. As players I feel we can do the same and create even more special moments in this new kit!"
