Why Bristol has banned cruises and flights from being advertised on council billboards

  • Bristol has become the first UK city to ban adverts promoting fast fashion on council-owned billboards.
  • The updated policy also prohibits advertising for high-carbon products and services, including non-electric cars, flights , cruise holidays and travel agents.
  • Restrictions will apply to council-owned display sites, including bus stops, free-standing digital screens, and billboards across the city.
  • While more than 20 UK councils already restrict ads for polluting services, Bristol is the first to include fast fashion in its ban.
  • Deputy council leader councillor Heather Mack stated the move will help counter damaging industries and encourage the promotion of sustainable alternatives.
