Why Arsenal are leading Chelsea and Tottenham in one crucial area but can still do better

Arsenal lead both Chelsea and Tottenham in an annual index which measures fan engagement for the 92 teams in England's top four divisions. That said, the Gunners still have plenty of room for improvement as they were ranked a lowly 62nd for the 2021/22 season.

Meanwhile, Spurs' efforts left them down in 81st while only six clubs ranked lower than Chelsea, who placed 86th. Arsenal are the only member of the so-called 'big six' to improve their ranking and score from the previous campaign, with Manchester United in 56th, Manchester City in 71st and Liverpool in 73rd.

The index rates clubs on three aspects of fan engagement based on publicly available data: the club's dialogue with supporters; how fans are involved in governance; and the transparency of decisions. Each score is combined for an overall rating, with fan-owned League Two's Exeter City leading the way for 2021/22 with a score of 210 (dialogue - 75, governance - 80, transparency - 55).
