Why Are We So Obsessed With Celebrity Teeth? An Investigation

There are some thoughts that just keep me up at night. For example, why did Disney Channel not renew JONAS: LA for a third season? Do British people actually think Costa coffee tastes good???

Another one is, why are we so obsessed with celebrity teeth? As someone who grew up devouring tacky tabloid magazines, I swear to Taylor that half of the content in the rags revolved around celeb teeth in some capacity.

It usually pertained to how straight they were, how white they were, before and after teeth transformations, whether they looked good while smiling, why British celebs had “bad” teeth — you get the picture. I honestly remember full articles about how bad Chris Martin‘s chompers were (at least it wasn’t all directed at women, which is a win).

It was a cultural obsession, and honestly, it still is today. Think about when Kendall Jenner did those teeth-whitening ads in 2016 — it was the talk of Instagram. Memes still circulate about Tom Cruise’s weird middle tooth (WTF is with that????).

The literal queen of the grin.

I’m sure you’ve all heard of ‘The Hollywood Smile’, which actually dates back to the 1920s when picture taking became way more accessible, and actors with crooked and discoloured teeth wanted a more classic smile to show on set. So, in 1928, Dr. Charles Pincus made the first aesthetic veneers to use during filming.

So, if you thought folks who become actors were just born with gorgeous teeth, it’s not the case. There’s no such thing as ‘nepo’ teeth. They get by with a little help from their cosmetic dentist friends.

Dr. Pincus’ veneers were made with acrylics and attached with glue so they could be removed for eating, brushing, and sleeping. They kind of looked like big, bright Tic-Tacs, which is cute in theory. Luckily these days, veneers no longer throw a spanner in the works when chomping down on a burg. Looks-wise, they’ve come a long way from old mates’ too.

Their impractical predecessors evolved into one-size-fits-all chonky permies, which are now making place for wafer-thin porcelain shells – something the experts at The Dental Room know all about. They specialise in personalised porcelain veneers that are uniquely designed and crafted based on your facial features — i.e. they are designed to complement the best/favourite parts of your face, which is pretty cute.

Now, obviously, the allure of this ‘Hollywood Smile’ lies in how dazzlingly white and straight celeb teeth are. But upon my Very Scientific Research, I noticed something else — all of these famous smiles are damn unique!! And we love them for their little quirks as much as we do their “perfection”. So I guess we’re pretty lucky that veneers have evolved to not only make your pearly whites brighter, but to exentuate all the unique stuff that makes you you.
