Who won Hungary’s election and why is it so important?

  • Péter Magyar has been elected as Prime Minister of Hungary, achieving a dramatic victory against the long-serving leader Viktor Orbán.
  • Magyar's Tiszaparty, a centre-right and pro-European political group, won Hungary’s elections, overcoming Orbán's Fidesz party, which had been in power for 16 years.
  • A 45-year-old lawyer from a politically prominent family, Magyar was previously married to former Fidesz justice minister Judit Varga, with whom he has three sons.
  • Magyar broke from the Fidesz party in 2024 after a scandal involving his then-wife and the pardoning of an individual linked to a paedophile case, subsequently releasing a secret recording alleging government interference.
  • His campaign, which included extensive touring of the countryside and the rallying cry 'Now or never!', promised to tackle corruption, improve the economy, unlock billions in EU funds, and support Hungary's disadvantaged Roma community.
