Fans of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire are angry about a Welsh contestant who left with nothing who they feel was "tricked".
During the episode that aired on Saturday, September 10, John McKenna from Port Talbot failed to get to £1,000 after being let down by the audience. He nailed the first four simple questions and had reached his £1,000 question and first safety net, something virtually every single contestant always achieves.
But presenter Jeremy Clarkson then asked: "Which of these is a thick omelette made with fried onion and potatoes, popular in Spain?"

John, a steelworks electricals engineer, then had these choices: A) Tortilla B) Churros C) Croquetas D) Gazpacho. The Welshman quickly ruled out the correct answer, tortilla, pointing out it was a "bread wrap". He said: "It's definitely not a tortilla, that's a wrap, I think gazpacho is like a soup. I'm not 100% sure what churros is, so I'm thinking it's croquetas."
"It's a tricky question that, for £1000," Jeremy acknowledged. John then decided to use a lifeline, pulling in the audience to help him. The audience voted 34% for tortilla and 52% for croquetas, with a small number voting for the others.
"Tortilla is definitely like a bread wrap, so I think I'll go with the audience and go for croquetas," John told Jeremy after seeing the results. There was a long pause before Jeremy then revealed: "I don't know how to say this, but that is the wrong answer." As John took it all in, Jeremy added: "Oh that really is a rotten bit of luck, you've let him down audience. I'm afraid you're only the second person in my tenure to be leaving with absolutely nothing at all. I'm sorry it was so brief."
But viewers have been commenting on the outcome and in many cases expressing their outrage. "I thought there were no trick questions in this game," said Julie Jones. "The question wasn't clear at all."
Ann Temp added: "He should be given a second chance, it wasn't a fair question. I was gutted for him" with Michael Mccarthy saying: "He was actually really good on fastest finger first, it’s a shame a question like that tripped him up , gutted for him."
Arthur Relph was full of sympathy for John saying: "Don’t know about anyone else but when I read the question I said ‘that’s a Spanish omelette’. I’d never heard tortilla used instead of it, I thought they didn’t have trick questions on here. How can an answer that has two possible answers ever work? Tap tortilla into Google and see what you get? It comes up bold as brass the wrap, you have to search a bit before finding out about the omelette."
Even people who thought the question was acceptable thought it was too low down in the order for how difficult it was. Andy West said: "More concerned that the audience thought it was that as well, although for a £1K question it was fairly tricky tbh. Feel sorry for the guy."
Rob Jones however was utterly without sympathy saying: "I think you're all missing the point. A tortilla as I know it is made with flour and water or, if Spanish, potato and onion. Not a tough question at all."
