Who sat in Everton directors box against Aston Villa shows Farhad Moshiri has not learned

It was an image that summed up the sorry state that Everton Football Club currently finds themselves in.

Such was the desperation to rescue a point against Aston Villa, Jordan Pickford went sent up for a corner as the clock ticked into the final few seconds of the match.

However, there was to be no fairy-tale ending for caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson, with the corner coming to nothing and referee Craig Pawson blowing up for full-time.

Make no mistake about it, Everton are a mess both on and off the pitch at this moment in time.

On the pitch, the Blues are well and truly in a relegation fight, and as their rivals around them begin to pick up points, even the most optimistic of Evertonians must now be fearing the worst.

Off the pitch, the club is in turmoil, and fans have clearly had enough, with some staging a sit-in protest against the club's board after the defeat on Saturday afternoon.

Supporters stayed behind in both the Gwladys Street and the Park End to chant against the current running of the club well after the final whistle had sounded.

But if yesterday proved anything it is that whoever is given the nod to replace Rafa Benitez is going to be scrambling to fix problems not of their own making.

The hope was that with a bit of inspiration from Ferguson, and the crowd behind them, Everton’s players could rise again and do something they have managed just once since the start of December.

But instead, and despite their being far more spirit and fight, Emi Buendia’s first half header condemned the Blues to their 10th loss in their last 14 games.

Everton are ultimately paying the price for years of wasted money and poor decision-making by the club’s hierarchy.

Owner Farhad Moshiri took the unusual step by writing to Evertonians on Friday in which he outlined his frustration at the 'inconsistent form in recent seasons, despite significant investment in the playing squad'.

But those hoping for changes would have been left disappointed by the sight of Kia Joorabchian in the directors box yesterday afternoon.

It was a move that suggested, despite the hopes of Blues supporters, that there is no great appetite from those at the top at Everton to change how things are run.

Moshiri and the club's board never seem to learn from their previous mistakes, and Everton’s next Premier League game at Newcastle United is absolutely huge.

As things stand at the minute, the ball is back in the board’s court, with them needing to make a decision on what to do next.

But whoever does come in, or if Ferguson stays on, they need to accept the threat of relegation is real - but that is just one of the many problems the new man will have to contend with.

The 'good times' seem a long way away for a club that is operating like it has had the life sucked out of it.
