Geraint Thomas of Ineos Grenadiers is leading the 2023 Giro d'Italia after 18 stages.
Thomas finished alongside key rival Primož Roglič on stage 18s mountain test to Val di Zoldo.
Both of them put time into rival João Almeida (UAE Emirates) on the stage where the Portuguese could not respond to the high pace set by Roglič's key domestique Sepp Kuss.
Thomas now leads the race by 29 seconds over Roglič in second place. Almeida is a further ten seconds back in third.
Earlier in the race, Thomas spent five days in pink after taking over the jersey following on from Remco Evenepoel's withdrawal.
The Welshman was second on general classification after finishing a second behind Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) on the second individual time trial, but was promoted to first after his rival's untimely departure from the race.
Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) spent the day in the break and so overhauled Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) to lead the mountains classification after getting up the road and picking up points. João Almeida is still the leader in the white young rider competition.
The peloton face another day featuring more than 5,000 metres of elevation gain on Firday on stage 19 to Tre Cime di Lavaredo in the Dolomites, before a punishing uphill time trial will decide the race on the penultimate day.
The Giro d'Italia will conclude in Rome on 28th May.
