Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt has four times more money than his Democratic opponent, Trudy Busch Valentine, heading into the final month of the U.S. Senate campaign.
According to the reports filed with the Federal Election Commission on Saturday, Schmitt had $1.2 million in his campaign account while Busch Valentine had $349,513, as of the end of the Sept. 30 reporting period.
That might not be much of an issue for Busch Valentine, who is a member of the family that once owned Annheuser-Busch and has proven she’s willing to put her own money into the campaign. Busch Valentine loaned $5.35 million of her own money into the campaign through the primary and shortly after, she loaned another $1 million to the campaign.
“We will have the resources we need to communicate with Missouri voters,” said Jacob Long, Busch Valentine’s communications director. “No matter how much Eric Schmitt spends, he can’t hide his extreme record.”
Schmitt has spent about $3.8 million over the course of the campaign, which included a crowded and expensive primary election that featured millions in outside spending. Busch Valentine has spent $7.3 million after getting into the campaign in late March.
“The Limousine Liberal Trudy Busch Valentine thinks she can buy this seat and ignore the needs of working families,” Schmitt said in a press release. “This wide support demonstrates Missourians are ready for a GOP-led Senate to lower prices, make America energy independent, and hold the Biden administration accountable.”
Schmitt’s campaign raised a little less than $1.5 million between July and September. His victory committee, a type of account campaigns set up to attract larger donors, raised another $504,915. A political action committee that supports Schmitt called Save Missouri Values raised $508,590.
Busch Valentine’s campaign set up a victory committee in October, after the September report had passed.
Schmitt, who is heavily favored to win the election, participated in at least two fundraisers hosted by Missouri U.S. Sens. Roy Blunt and Josh Hawley after winning the primary — one in Washington and one in Kansas City. It is unclear how much Schmitt raised at an October fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago, the resort and home of President Donald Trump, because it was held after the reporting deadline.
