Who killed Jeffrey Dahmer and why gruesome cannibal killer was brutally murdered

Dahmer has been hugely popular on streaming platform Netflix over the past week, as viewers watched American Horror Story star Evan Peters act out Jeffrey Dahmer's vile and cannibalistic ways in the series.

Since Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story aired, true crime fans have been left with plenty of questions due to Dahmer's terrifying and repulsive actions, with Netflix announcing that new documentary, Conversations With A Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes, will be released on October 7.

Dahmer, also known as The Cannibal of Milwaukee, was convicted of 15 murder charges in 1992 for murdering 17 Black, Latino and Asian men from 1978 to 1991, which resulted in him being sentenced to 957 years in prison.

However, his jailtime was cut short as he was brutally killed in prison.

But who killed Jeffrey Dahmer and why did they murder the serial killer?

Here's everything you need to know.

Wisconsin, where Dahmer was born and committed all of his crimes, abolished the death penalty in 1853 - 139 years before Dahmer was convicted.

Although the death penalty was not an option for the sick killer, he stated in a court report that it was something he wished for at the time of his sentencing.

Dahmer was sent to Columbia Correctional Facility in Wisconsin following sentencing and he stayed in the prison until his death in 1994.

The serial killer was brutally beaten to death inside the jail by fellow inmate, Christopher Scarver.

The inmate was serving a life sentence for shooting Steven Lohman, a worker at Wisconsin Conservation Corps, three times back in 1990.

While carrying out his prison cleaning duties on November 28, 1994, Scarver killed fellow inmates Jesse Anderson and Dahmer while they were left unattended for 20 minutes.

In the recent Netflix series, Scarver was played by Furly Mac, who acted out the brutal murder scene where Scarver killed Dahmer by hitting him with a weight bar before turning on Anderson.

In an interview with the New York Post in 2015, Scarver told the publication that he murdered Dahmer because the killer, who was known for eating the remains of his victims, would taunt other inmates by "fashion[ing] severed limbs out of prison food" and drizzling ketchup on meals to pretend that it was blood.

He added: "He would put them in places where people would be."

Scarver, who was 45 at the time, told the outlet. "He crossed the line with some people – prisoners, prison staff. Some people who are in prison are repentant – but he was not one of them."

Scarver is currently serving time at Centennial Correctional Facility in Colorado after he was given two additional life sentences for the murder of his former inmates.

According to reports, Scarver began writing poetry and books in 2015 as he served his sentence.
