Who is Ukraine leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy? The actor who played president before becoming one for real

The Ukrainian leader, who had no political experience before he stood for election under three years ago, has received worldwide praise for his resistance in the fight against the Russian invasion.

Prior to his occupation of office in May 2019, Volodymyr Zelenskyy had obtained a law degree from Kyiv National Economic University before turning his attention to acting.

During his entertainment career, he created, starred in, and produced a political satire TV series 'Servant of the People'.

In the show, he played a high-school history teacher political-outsider who found himself as President of Ukraine following a viral video filmed by a student of him ranting against Government corruption.

Much like his TV character, Mr Zelenskyy announced his candidacy for the 2019 elections as an outsider and went on to win in a landslide democratic election, defeating a billionaire businessman.

He promised to break the power of corrupt oligarchs who have haphazardly controlled Ukraine since the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Despite concerns over his ability to lead, less than three years in the Ukrainian President has proved to be a tough leader who has remained with the fight in Kyiv, despite being a number one target for Russian invaders.

Political observers, many of whom once saw Mr Zelenskyy as something of a lightweight, say they have been moved by his example.

After an offer from the USA to transport him to safety, Mr Zelenskyy replied: "I need ammunition, not a ride."

Observers say Russian forces' chief objective is to reach the capital to depose Mr Zelenskyy and his government and install someone more compliant to Russian president Vladimir Putin.

He has continued to update the people of Ukraine on his social media, filming himself talking in the capital during the ongoing attacks.
