Who is Perr Schuurs? Torino defender linked with Liverpool move

The transfer window is open while international transfers cannot be signed until Saturday, July 1 but it hasn't stopped Liverpool from being linked with players across the continent.

The latest is Torino defender Perr Schuurs. Jurgen Klopp is facing a massive summer with many describing it as an overhaul or a rebuild - their midfield engine room is the focus for improvement after being exposed throughout their difficult Premier League campaign.

Alexis Mac Allister has already been unveiled as Liverpool's first summer signing after arriving from Brighton & Hove Albion, he is now on international duty with Argentina ahead of meeting up with his new teammates for the first time next month.

While the central midfield remains the targeted area for bolstering this summer, defenders are being repeatedly linked with the Reds. So what is the story behind Perr Schuurs?

Who is Liverpool-linked Perr Schuurs?

Perr Schuurs is a Holland U21 international who started his professional career with Fortuna Sittard. He spent two years with the club with a spell back on loan before switching to Ajax, making 31 appearances for their Jong side, he went on to make 62 appearances for the first team.

He swapped the Eredivisie for Serie A last season for a reported fee of €9.4m (£8m) and made 30 Italian league appearances in his debut season.

His contract in Turin expires in three years with an option for an extra year.

Schuurs is a right-footed defender and will turn 24 at the end of November. He comes from a sporting background as he is the son of former international handball player Lambert Schuurs.

His sister, Demi, is currently ranked world number 12 on the WTA Tennis tour.

What has been reported about Liverpool's 'interest' in Perr Schuurs?

This week (commencing June 12), Caught Offside reported that the Torino defender had been earmarked as a transfer target. He isn't the only player to have been linked with a move from the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino to Anfield after Gleison Bremer was mooted to heed the Reds' defensive woes in 2021.

Their report suggests that the 23-year-old impressed in his debut season with Liverpool now 'considering' him as one of their options to strengthen the squad this summer.

Should the speculated interest be true, Klopp's side could face competition from Torino's city rivals Juventus. His current club are reportedly ready to start negotiations for a fee of around €20m (£17m) to €25m (£21m).

What should we make of the Perr Schuurs links?

On Monday, chief Liverpool writer Ian Doyle wrote in the article 'Jorg Schmadtke working on two shortlists for double Liverpool transfer plan': "There has been no indication from inside Liverpool of a great desire to sign a right-back this summer, suggesting there is no real interest in Bayern Munich's Benjamin Pavard.

"Only if Kostas Tsimikas looks to depart will a new left-back be considered, although Liverpool were impressed by Luke Chambers' loan spell at Kilmarnock, where the 18-year-old played in five different positions...

"... One area where Liverpool are certainly looking is centre-back, as admitted by Jurgen Klopp last month. It would be slightly overstating matters to say the heart of the defence is a ticking time bomb.

"But with Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip both in their 30s, the latter entering the last 12 months of his contract and Joe Gomez struggling for consistency in the position, it would be a proactive move from Liverpool, particularly with one or both of Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams likely to have suitors this summer.

"If not this summer, a new centre-back will arrive inside the next 12 or so months.

"A left-sided central defender is the ideal, and one with the potential to grow into the position. England under-21 international Levi Colwill, who has returned to Chelsea after an impressive season on loan at Brighton, would fit the bill and is admired by the Liverpool recruitment team.

"The Reds, though, have not at present registered any official interest in Micky van de Ven, who is at Schmadtke's former club Wolfsburg. As with midfielders, Liverpool are now looking to whittle down the list of possible targets."
