Newly installed Prime Minister Liz Truss has appointed close ally Kwasi Kwarteng to the role of Chancellor to help steer the country through a deepening cost-of-living crisis.
The pair have just days to gather Treasury civil servants and thrash out a major economic package after promising action to help struggling families with soaring energy bills within a week.
They are also expected to deliver an emergency budget after Ms Truss pledged over £30 billion in tax cuts during the Tory leadership contest.
