India opened its account at the 2026 Commonwealth Games with a remarkable story of determination, as Jhandu Kumar clinched a bronze medal in the Men’s Heavyweight Para Powerlifting event in Glasgow. The 28-year-old from Bihar delivered India’s first podium finish at the Games.
From Struggles to the Podium
Hailing from a modest background, Jhandu is the son of a roadside vegetable vendor and once worked as an e-rickshaw driver to support his family. Despite financial hardships, he remained committed to training and pursuing his dream of representing India.
Affected by polio at the age of five, he overcame both physical and economic challenges early in life. Even during tough times, he balanced work and rigorous training, often heading to the gym after long workdays.
Emotional Victory
The medal marked a life-changing moment for Jhandu, who reflected on his journey after stepping onto the podium.
"I feel as if I'm flying. This is my first medal. Only one thing was going through my mind: that I have to win the medal. Just have to win," Jhandu told ANI.
Turning Point in Career
His persistence eventually paid off when he caught the attention of national coach Rajinder Singh Rahelu, who invited him to train at the Sports Authority of India’s National Centre of Excellence in Gandhinagar. This opportunity proved to be a turning point, helping him rise through the ranks with strong performances at national and international events.
Bronze-Sealing Performance in Glasgow
In Glasgow, Jhandu secured bronze with a successful lift of 190kg after opening at 181kg. He also attempted a Commonwealth Games record lift of 196kg in his final attempt but narrowly missed.
