Jasmine Bugarín, a Mexican senator from the Pacific coast state of Nayarit who has emerged as a leading figure in the governing Morena coalition ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election, is pushing back after President Claudia Sheinbaum questioned whether she still holds U.S. citizenship.
"I didn't choose where I was born," Bugarín said this week. "But I have always been able to choose where my roots are, which country to belong to, and whom to serve and represent: Mexico and the people of Nayarit."
