Who is Huw Edwards? BBC news reader's education, career and reported salary

Huw Edwards is one of the BBC's most famous faces and most of us have probably seen him popping up on our screens as we watch the news.

Since his career began as a BBC trainee in 1984, the Welsh newsreader has covered some of the most momentous stories in recent years such as the Queen's death, the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the London 2012 Olympics.

But who actually is Huw Edwards and what has his career looked like as a presenter? We've rounded up everything you need to know, from his early life to his reported yearly salary.

Who is Huw Edwards?

Huw was born in Bridgend, Wales, on August 18 1961.

He graduated from University College in Cardiff with a degree in French in 1983 before moving on to study a Postgraduate in Medieval French at Cardiff University.

His first brush with the media happened when he left university and began doing some work with a local radio station, Swansea Sound, and after building some experience he was awarded a traineeship with the BBC - where the married father-of-five would spend most of his career.

When he first began working with the BBC, Huw's role was a Parliamentary Correspondent for the BBC Wales channel.

It was in 1994 that Huw began a regular role presenting the BBC News at Six.

And nine years after that, his position as the News at 10 kicked off - something that most of us probably know him best for.

But the BBC originally faced some backlash for this move, because of Huw's strong Welsh accent being on such a prominent programme.

He is the BBC's go-to presenter for big news events and has been front and centre in live broadcasts of election coverage, the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012 and Platinum Jubilee in 2022, the wedding of the then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2011, the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in 2018, and the funeral of the late Duke of Edinburgh in 2021.

He was also the BBC's voice at Trooping the Colour and the Festival of Remembrance.

Huw was a Westminster correspondent for 13 years, and has played a key role in the BBC's political reporting, taking over election coverage from the long-serving David Dimbleby in 2019.

The presenter told the Radio Times in 2019: "I'm going to let you in on a secret: the first time a senior BBC manager dangled this carrot in front of me was in 1992. So it's been at the back of my mind since then."

What is Huw Edwards' salary?

Huw Edwards is one of the BBC's highest paid male newsreaders, and he reportedly earns £410,000 and £414,999 per year according to the Scotsman.

This is even after he voluntarily reduced his salary after gender pay differences within the BBC were uncovered.
