Who is Graham Platner? From tattoo controversy to sexual assault allegations, why Democrats want the Maine Senate candidate out

Just weeks after emerging as one of the Democratic Party’s most closely watched Senate candidates, Graham Platner is facing mounting pressure to withdraw from Maine’s 2026 U.S. Senate race following sexual assault allegations. According to Politico, a woman alleged that Graham Platner entered her home without permission and raped her while he was heavily intoxicated nearly five years ago when they were in a casual dating relationship.

The controversy has prompted top Democrats, including Senate leaders and party organizations, to publicly call on Platner to end his campaign, raising questions about the future of a race that was seen as critical to Democrats’ hopes of challenging Republican Senator Susan Collins.

Who is Graham Platner?

Graham Platner is a Maine oyster farmer, harbormaster, military veteran, and Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate who rose to prominence after winning his party’s nomination to challenge incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins.

A resident of Sullivan, Maine, Platner built his campaign around support for working-class families, veterans, and rural communities, presenting himself as an outsider seeking to bring change to Washington.

According to his campaign biography, Platner enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 2003 during the Iraq War and completed three deployments to Iraq. He later joined the Maryland Army National Guard and served another deployment in Afghanistan as a rifle team leader.

After returning home, he struggled with post-war challenges, including PTSD, before rebuilding his life in Maine's maritime industry. In 2018, Platner began working at a small oyster farm in his hometown of Sullivan, Maine, later taking over the business and expanding it into a successful oyster operation.

He also launched a diving and mooring service and served the community as Sullivan’s harbormaster and Planning Board chair. In 2023, he married Amy Gertner, and the couple now lives in Sullivan with their pets.

What are the allegations against Graham Platner?

The political crisis erupted after a woman, Jenny Racicot, accused Platner of sexually assaulting her during an incident in 2021. The woman alleged that the attack happened when the two were casually dating, reports CNN.

Racicot alleged that in late 2021, Platner arrived intoxicated at her home despite being asked not to come and then sexually assaulted her, ignoring her repeated pleas for him to stop. She said that during the incident, a sewing cabinet was knocked over, leaving a needle lodged in her leg. According to Racicot, when she confronted Platner the following morning, he told her he did not remember what had happened.

Platner has denied the allegation.

In public statements, he has rejected claims that he committed sexual assault and has maintained that the accusations are untrue. However, he acknowledged that the controversy has created a serious challenge for his campaign and indicated he was considering his next steps. Calling the allegation "categorically false", Platner said he was "taking the time to reflect on the best path forward" in the race.

Graham Platner Tattoo

The latest accusation comes after Platner had already faced scrutiny over previous controversies involving old social media posts, comments that drew criticism from fellow Democrats, and a tattoo that critics said resembled a Nazi-era symbol, which Platner later covered and apologized for.

In 2025, he apologised and removed a tattoo on his chest resembling a Nazi symbol that sparked backlash. The controversy first surfaced after a social media video showed Platner dancing in his underwear at his brother's wedding, revealing a chest tattoo that critics said resembled the Totenkopf, or "death's head" symbol. According to the Anti-Defamation League, the skull-and-crossbones emblem was used by Nazi forces during World War II.

Responding to the criticism, Platner denied any knowledge of the symbol's historical association, telling the BBC: "I absolutely would not have gone through life having this on my chest if I knew that – and to insinuate that I did is disgusting. I already had the tattoo covered with a new design."

Why do Democrats want him out of the race?

The pressure on Platner intensified because many Democratic leaders believe the allegations could severely damage the party's chances in one of the most important Senate contests of 2026.

The Maine Democratic Party issued a statement urging Platner to withdraw, citing what it described as "serious" and "credible" allegations.

Several prominent Democrats have also publicly called for him to step aside, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other national party figures. Major Democratic organizations and political action committees have reportedly withdrawn support or endorsements as the fallout has grown.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) has also indicated it would not back Platner's campaign if he remains in the race, a significant blow in a high-profile Senate contest.

Political strategists fear the controversy could weaken Democratic efforts to unseat or defeat Republican incumbent Susan Collins in a state considered one of the party's best opportunities to gain a Senate seat.

Can Democrats replace Graham Platner?

Under Maine election rules, Democrats may still be able to nominate a replacement candidate if Platner withdraws before a key deadline.

Reports indicate that July 13 has emerged as a critical date. If Platner leaves the race before then, party leaders could move forward with selecting another nominee for the November election.

That possibility has fueled growing calls from Democratic officials who argue that a new candidate would give the party a better chance of remaining competitive in the race.

What happens next?

As of now, Platner remains the Democratic nominee and continues to deny the allegations against him.

However, with endorsements disappearing, party leaders distancing themselves, and questions swirling about his political future, the coming days could determine whether he stays in the race or becomes one of the most dramatic political casualties of the 2026 election cycle.

For Democrats, the stakes extend beyond one candidate. The outcome could influence control of a key Senate seat and potentially affect the broader balance of power in Washington after the midterm elections.
