Who is Dinesh Thakkar, Angel One founder bought an entire 63,000-sq-ft Juhu tower for Rs 711 crore in India’s largest luxury home purchase?

Dinesh Thakkar, founder, chairman and managing director of Angel One, has entered into an agreement to buy an entire luxury residential tower in Mumbai’s Juhu for over Rs 711 crore, putting one of India’s most prominent stockbroking entrepreneurs in the spotlight for one of the country’s biggest residential transactions.

The property, at Embassy Terazza on Juhu Tara Road, is not a conventional luxury apartment. Thakkar is acquiring an entire G+7 tower spread across a RERA carpet area of 63,000 sq ft. According to ET’s report, the deal works out to around ₹1.13 lakh per sq ft, a new record for residential property in Juhu. Embassy Developments has described the transaction as India’s largest single residential unit transaction.

But who is Dinesh Thakkar, the man behind the ₹711-crore purchase?

Who is Dinesh Thakkar?

Thakkar is the founder, chairman and managing director of Angel One. The company was incorporated in 1996, and Thakkar is Angel One’s founder, current chairman and managing director.

Angel One began as a traditional stock brokerage and later transformed into a digital-first financial services company. The company says its digital journey began in 2019, when it started offering an end-to-end digital investment solution. It has since expanded its customer base across India, including tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

Thakkar has remained at the centre of that transformation for around three decades. His career with the business dates back to its early years, making the ₹711-crore property purchase a striking personal milestone after decades of building the company.

From stockbroking to a ₹711-crore home

Thakkar has previously spoken about taking a long-term approach to building businesses rather than chasing quick results. In an interview with Mashable India, he said entrepreneurs often want results within two or three years, while building a lasting business can take decades.

He also spoke about a major setback early in his technology journey. Thakkar said he had invested heavily in an internet trading platform around 2001 and lost around 80% of his capital during the dot-com bubble.

Rather than treating failure as something to hide, he later introduced what he called a “failure club” at Angel One. Employees could discuss projects that did not work, examine why they failed and look at how others could help solve the underlying problems.

His broader philosophy has been built around persistence, discipline and compounding. He has said businesses need time to move through their less exciting phases before the results become visible.

He once preferred renting over buying

The Juhu purchase also marks a significant change from the approach Thakkar described earlier in his career.

In the interview, he said he rented homes until around the age of 38-40. His reasoning was that, during the early stages of his career, he preferred deploying capital into his business rather than putting large amounts of money into real estate.

Thakkar said he believed his business was generating stronger returns and therefore wanted to keep capital within the company. He eventually decided that owning a home made more sense once his career, location and family life had become more settled.

The ₹711-crore Embassy Terazza acquisition now represents a very different scale of home ownership.

Why the Juhu tower is different

The purchase is unusual not only because of its price but also because of what Thakkar is buying.

Instead of acquiring one apartment in a luxury development, he is buying an entire G+7 residential tower. The tower has a RERA carpet area of 63,000 sq ft and forms part of Embassy Terazza, a five-tower development spread across more than two acres.

The project is planned to have around 50 residences and an estimated gross development value of more than ₹3,000 crore. The development is being executed by Embassy Developments under a development management model.

Thakkar has named his new dream home “Angelus”. Embassy said he wanted privacy, spaciousness, exceptional sea views and a long-term family sanctuary.

Dinesh Thakkar's car collection, fitness and the billionaire mindset

Away from business, Thakkar has spoken extensively about fitness and discipline. He said a slipped-disc episode after a back injury eventually pushed him towards serious weight training. His son, a certified fitness coach, introduced him to Olympic bars and structured weight training.

Thakkar has described fitness as more than a health routine, linking it to discipline and the ability to pursue long-term goals.

Cars are another major interest. He has spoken about owning performance-focused models including a Mini Cooper, AMG GT S, Lamborghini Huracán Performante, AMG G-Wagon, Ferrari 488 Pista and Porsche GT3 RS.

He has said that he began treating luxury cars as rewards after achieving professional milestones, rather than buying them simply as impulsive purchases.

A major luxury purchase after three decades

The Juhu transaction comes as Mumbai’s ultra-luxury housing market continues to see demand for large-format homes offering privacy, space and exclusivity. ET reported that limited availability of sizeable residential inventory in established locations such as Juhu, Bandra and Worli has supported values at the top end of the market.

For Thakkar, however, the Embassy Terazza deal is also the latest chapter in a journey that began with a stockbroking business in 1996.

From losing a large portion of his capital during the dot-com crash to building Angel One into a major digital financial-services company, his career has been shaped by the long-term approach he often advocates. The ₹711-crore purchase of an entire Juhu tower now adds one of the country’s largest luxury home transactions to that three-decade story.
