Who is Bruno Guimaraes? The Lyon playmaker linked with £34m Newcastle transfer

Newcastle United have reportedly made an offer for Lyon playmaker Bruno Guimaraes.

Multiple reports in France indicate the Magpies have submitted a bid in the region of £34m for the Brazil international.

Brazilian outlet GE Globo claim the Ligue 1 outfit have accepted the bid, with several reports suggesting the midfielder could quadruple his salary at St James' Park.

The reported move for Guimaraes comes after several days of intense speculation over prospective deals for the likes of Diego Carlos and Jesse Lingard.

Here is everything Newcastle fans need to know about the latest Magpies transfer target.

What is being said about Guimaraes?

News of United's reported interest in the Lyon midfielder broke on Tuesday evening, and has since been stood up by several reports.

The Athletic report the Magpies have made the 24-year-old their 'top midfield target' with less than a week to go in the January window.

Despite GE Globo's claim, several outlets report that Lyon are yet to respond to the offer.

What is Guimaraes' career history?

Guimaraes was released by Flamengo at the age of 12, but was subsequently scouted by Athletico Paranaense in 2017 after a spell with Brazil's Serie D side Audax.

This initial loan deal was turned permanent, and within the space of a couple of years the midfielder emerged as one of Brazil's brightest talents.

Athletico Paranaense reportedly received enquiries from Arsenal and Chelsea for the rising star, but it was Lyon who convinced to make the move in January 2020.

Sporting director and former Brazil international Juninho Pernambucano played a key role in landing the midfielder despite interest from elsewhere.

What type of player is Guimaraes?

The 24-year-old has been described as the 'complete midfielder', typically deployed as a sitting midfielder but capable of dictating attacks.

Scouted Football describe Guimaraes' most 'striking quality' as his passing, often dropping to pick up possession from his defenders before launching attacks with diagonal switches of play.

The reported Magpies transfer target ranks highly in both tackles across Europe's top leagues, as well as progressive carries.

Guimaraes may be listed as an anchor man on the team sheet, but has been described as a box-to-box midfielder who often leads the press.

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has been cited by both Guimaraes and his mother as a player who influenced his development.

He previously told Ligue 1's website: “I am a fan of players like Ronaldinho Gaúcho and Zinédine Zidane, I used to like watching them play.

"At the moment I like Ilkay Gündogan at Manchester City, but since I was little I have been inspired by Andrés Iniesta.”

What have others said about Guimaraes?

Lyon's sporting director Juninho Pernambucano: "I was a pundit in Brazil when I saw him for the first time and I was impressed by his qualities.

"He is a complete midfielder. He sees things before others. He takes risks.”

Athletico Paranaense sporting director Paulo André told L’Equipe: “He is creative, brave and versatile. Believe me, this kid is worth his weight in gold.”

Would Guimaraes be interested in a move?

It is unclear at this stage whether Guimaraes would be willing to join the Magpies in their fight for Premier League survival, despite claims of a lucrative contract offer.

However, the midfielder has not been shy in the past of outlining his ambition to one day play in the Premier League.

He previously told Fox Sports via Get Football News France: “I have always said to my agents that I dream of playing in England, it is the best league in the world, all the matches are close.

"Even when the team in first plays against the team in last, it looks like a final."
