Chelsea have reportedly completed the signing of Alex Matos from Norwich City.
Matos, according to the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, is set to join the Blues on a free transfer with add-ons. The 18-year-old joined Norwich officially in 2016 and has been a regular for the club's Premier League 2 side as well as making appearances in the Under-18s Premier League and FA Youth Cup.
Matos has also been on the books of Luton Town before joining Norwich. Last year, Matos signed his first professional contract with the Canaries having begun his two-year scholarship with the club in July 2021.
Matos can play in attacking midfield or either wing and can also play as a striker. It has been reported that Chelsea academy manager Jim Fraser was pushing for the move for Matos because of his plans to build a strong Under-21 squad.
Fraser was promoted to head of youth development and recruitment back in February with his current role now focusing on registrations and recruitment with a responsibility for bringing in the best young talent to Chelsea's academy. Matos, meanwhile, was called up to an England squad at Under-15s level and even turned out for Norwich's under-18s while still at schoolboy level.
"I'm a forward who can play anywhere in the front line," Matos said last year. "My pace is probably my best attribute, getting into the box and creating chances, it’s a big part of my game."
The Canaries ended their 2022/23 season in sixth place in the Premier League 2 Division 2, 12 points off leaders Southampton in first place. Chelsea, meanwhile, finished in third place with 43 points from 26 games with 13 points separating them from winners Manchester City.
Liverpool finished the season in second with 46 points and Crystal Palace in fourth with 42 points.
