The head of the World Health Organization has raised alarm over the ongoing Israeli military operation at Al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the critical nature of the situation, stating that hospitals should never be battlegrounds.
The WHO chief expressed deep worry about the safety of health workers, patients, and civilians at Al-Shifa Hospital. Reports from displaced Palestinians revealed that Israeli military vehicles and bulldozers have been involved in demolishing and excavating the hospital's surroundings as part of the operation that commenced on Monday morning.
Ghebreyesus highlighted that the hospital had recently restored minimal health services, and any form of fighting or militarization of the facility could severely impact health services, ambulance access, and the delivery of life-saving medical supplies.
The WHO's concern underscores the need for the protection of healthcare facilities and personnel in conflict zones to ensure the continuity of essential medical services for the affected population.
