A total of 21 appointed referees will be used for the 2024/25 Premier League season, with one new face being promoted to this elite group.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) is the body responsible for match officials in English professional football and therefore select Premier League referees.
Any of the 21 referees appointed to the Select Group 1 can oversee Premier League matches and FourFourTwo takes at look at the chosen few who be officiating top-flight games this season.

Stuart Attwell
A very familiar face for English football fans, Stuart Attwell was the youngest person to ever referee in the Premier League back in 2008 when he was promoted to the Select Group of referees, but as dropped in 2012, before making his way back to the top tier in 2016.
Spent the summer in Germany as on VAR duty at Euro 2024.
Peter Bankes
Peter Bankes is an experienced Premier League and Championship referee, who won a place in the Select Group 1 prior to the 2019/20 season.
He drew the ire of David Moyes last season after West Ham's 2-2 draw against Newcastle United, with the former Hammers boss questioning a number of decisions and believed he should have handed Bruno Guimaraes a second yellow card.
Sam Barrott
A new name on the list this year, after Barrott was promoted to the Select Group 1 in the summer, after taking charge of 15 Premier League matches last season. Turned to refereeing after his playing career was derailed by an injury as a youth team player.
Fulham boss Marco Silva criticised Barrott and said he lacked experience after his side lost at Newcastle United in December, with the 31-year-old added more Premier League matches to his resume, plus a Championship play-off semi-final and the League One play-off final before the season was out.
Darren Bond
An experienced official who spent most of his career in the Championship before his Premier League debut in January 2023. The Lancashire-born referee oversaw five top-flight games last season, plus 13 in the Championship as he continues to split his time between the two competitions.
Tom Bramall
Sheffield-born Bramall was promoted to the Select Group 1 in 2022 and worked as a PE and mathematics teacher before he became a professional referee.
Bramall has officiated 19 Premier League matches over the past two seasons, including a fiesty Wolves win over Nottingham Forest in October 2022 in which he awared two penalties. Has only got his red card out once in the Premier League, when he sent off Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister against Bournemouth last season.
John Brooks
Leicestershire-based John Brooks made his Premier League refereeing bow in December 2021, with the most controversial moment of his career coming in February 2023 when he incorrectly ruled out a Pervis Estupinan goal for Brighton against Crystal Palace. This came after a VAR referral that had seen the lines incorrectly drawn on by a technician, with Brooks dropped for two matches following a PGMOL meeting.
Brooks was due to oversee the FA Community Shield but was replaced by Jarred Gillett after suffering a minor injury.
David Coote
David Coote started refereeing as a 16-year-old, in the Notts Alliance League, the Northern Counties East Football League, the Northern Premier League and the Conference North before being promoted to the Football League.
Coote was promoted as a Football League referee in 2010 and then to the Premier League in 2018. He was in charge for the 2023 EFL Cup win between Manchester United and Newcastle United and heads into the 2024/25 season with more than 100 Premier League matches under his belt.
Darren England
Darren England was promoted to the Select Group 1 in the summer of 2020 and became FIFA listed in 2022. Has clocked up more than 50 Premier League matches since then, but was the subject of a scathing statement from Liverpool after a Luis Diaz goal was ruled out against Tottenham in September 2023 when England was on VAR duty, with PGMOL releasing a statement admitting 'significant human error.'
Jarred Gillett
Jarred Gillett became the first Australian to referee in the Premier League after being promoted to the Select Group 1 in the summer of 2021. After a stellar career Down Under, he moved to England in 2019 and worked his way up to the top-flight.
Was a regular in the Premier League last season, overseeing 21 matches.
Tony Harrington
Tony Harrington was given the Select Group 1 nod in the summer of 2021, with his first match coming in December of that year.
The Hartlepool-born official was the man in the middle for a Wolves defeat to West Ham last season, which saw Gary O'Neil charged by the FA for calling a VAR decision to chalk off a late equaliser as 'scandalous'.
Simon Hooper
Simon Hooper has taken charge of more than 100 Premier League matches since his competition bow in 2015. The Burnley-born official was added to the Select Group 1 in 2018 and is one of the division's more experienced officials.
His last major flashpoint came when he failed to give Manchester City a late advantage during a 3-3 draw with Spurs in December 2023, with referees chief Howard Webb admitting that Hooper was 'devasted' by his error.
Rob Jones
Rob Jones' first Premier League game as referee came in December 2019 and he would go on to earn a place in Select Group 1 at the end of the season following a rapid rise through the divisions.
Was infamously called a 'complete sh*thouse' by Jermaine Jenas on Twitter after awarding an Arsenal penalty in a September 2023 north London derby, with the One Show host later apologising for his remarks.
Chris Kavanagh
Mancehster-born Chris Kavanagh was promoted to the Select Group of Referees in 2017, after five years of refereeing in the National League and earned a place on FIFA’s international referees list in 2019.
A veteran of almost 150 Premier League games, Kavanagh took charge of the 2024 EFL Cup final between Chelsea and Liverpool.
Andy Madley
Huddersfield-born Andy Madley has been refereeing in the Premier League in 2018 and was added to the Select Group 1 in 2019. He had been working as a referee in Select Group 2 for three years prior.
Had the honour of refereeing the 2024 FA Cup final between Manchester City and Manchester United
Michael Oliver
One of English football's most high-profile referees, he was promoted to the Select Group in 2010 at the age of just 25 and has been on the UEFA Elite Group of Referees since 2018.
Oversaw four matches at Euro 2024, which was his third major international tournament and begins the 2024/25 season having been in charge of 372 Premier League matches.
Craig Pawson
Sheffield-born Craig Pawson has been refereeing since 1993 and regulating officiating in the Football League since 2012. He first refereed in the Premier League in March 2013, during a Swansea City win against Newcastle United.
Another vastly experienced official who is closing in on 250 Premier League games, Dawson was demoted by UEFA earlier this summer and is now on their third tier for officials, following a campaign that included the controversial ruling out of a late Chelsea goal against Aston Villa in April.
Tim Robinson
Tim Robinson was promoted to Select Group 1 prior to the 2023/24 season, which came four years after his first Premier League game in December 2019.
Still fairly green at the Premier League level, but has more than 350 EFL games under his belt.
Michael Salisbury
Michael Salisbury was added to the Premier League roster prior to the 2021/22 season after he began refereeing in local leagues in Preston since 2001.
Another referee to annoy Wolves boss Gary O'Neil, who said Salisbury admitted he 'got it wrong' when he awarded a Fulham penalty in a defeat at Craven Cottage last season.
Graham Scott
Graham Scott of Oxford was promoted to the Select Group of Referees in 2015. He started officiating in 1997.
Scott was almost demoted by the PGMOL in 2017 after reffing just eight Premier League games all season but appealed against his demotion and retained his place.
Has now refereed more than 100 Premier League matches and splits his time between the top-flight and Championship.
Anthony Taylor
A veteran of more than 350 Premier League games and three major international tournaments, including this summer's Euro 2024, Anthony Taylor was promoted to the list of Select Group Referees in 2010.
The Manchester-born official took charge of the League Cup final at Wembley Stadium when Chelsea defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0; he was also the first man in over 100 years to referee a second FA Cup final, after taking on 2020 final, three years after his first. Both were between Arsenal and Chelsea.
Taylor was the referee on the pitch during the match between Finland and Denmark at Euro 2020, in which Christian Eriksen collapsed. He was widely praised for his calm reaction to the situation, signalling for medical attention within seconds.
Paul Tierney
Another experienced official, Wigan-born Paul Tierney has been refereeing in the Premier League since 2014 and was promoted to the FIFA list of Referees on 1 January 2018.
He now has more than 180 Premier League games under his belt and oversaw the 2021 EFL Cup, plus the 2023 FA Cup final.
