The Sari That Arrives Before the Tears Dry
In many Hindu households, the white sari comes before the funeral arrangements are complete. The widow's sindoor is wiped away, her bangles broken, her coloured clothes folded into a box that may never be opened again. The sequence is so practised it feels like ritual, because it is. But ritual and meaning are not the same thing. The white sari was not designed to hold a woman's grief. It was designed to mark her removal from the social world of the living.
