White vinegar among 'super effective' home condiments that can be used to kill weeds

Gardening experts have claimed that a common household condiment can be used as a "super effective" way to kill weeds.

Green-fingered geniuses at Fantastic Services say white vinegar can kill weeds that grow in paving stones and patios because of its high acetic acid content.

Treating problem areas with white vinegar effectively burns the weeds, according to the experts.

But gardeners are warned that only specific types of vinegar - namely those with a minimum of five per cent acetic acid - will be effective at getting rid of those annoying weeds.

That kind of concentration is present in household white vinegar.

The gardening experts told The Express : “Vinegar is super effective when dealing with smaller weeds, not so much with bigger ones.

“When applying it to weeds, make sure not to spill it on any neighbouring plants, as it will burn them as well.”

Salt is another item found in most kitchens that can be used to remove weeds from pavements and patios.

The gardening gurus explained that the condiment has been used for hundreds of years as a herbicide.

They said that when one part salt is mixed well with three parts water in a spray bottle it can be applied to weeds growing between the block paving. Once the mixture has dried, gardeners can cover the weeded areas with dry salt.

This should be repeated every two to four weeks.

Baking soda is also an effective natural weed killer, according to the experts, and can be scattered in large amounts over block paving.

A broom can be used to sweep the soda into the crevices where the weeds are sprouting from. Water should then be sprayed all over the patio using a hose.

The best time to apply this method is during the spring and autumn.
