The Home Run Derby is one of baseball’s marquee events of the year. Monday night’s version was a crowning achievement for Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who knocked off Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena in the final round to win the first Derby of his career. But not every participant emerged from the event unscathed.
On Tuesday, the White Sox announced that All-Star center fielder Luis Robert Jr. felt calf tightness during the first round of the Derby. He later underwent an MRI, and his status is considered day to day, putting his availability for the team’s Friday game against the Braves in question.
Robert defeated Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman, 28-27, in the first round, delivering the second-most home runs in the opening round. He was eliminated in the second round by Arozarena, 35-22.
Robert, who is in his fourth major league season, is a first-time All-Star after blasting 26 home runs with a .271/.330/.569 slash line through his first 89 games this season. He was the lone White Sox representative at this year’s All-Star Game.
