The Joe Biden White House has expressed sympathy and support to the Princess of Wales after her announcement that she is being treated for cancer.

Biden’s press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, wished Catherine a full recovery at a Friday press briefing.

“All of us just heard the terrible news,” she said. “Our thoughts are with the Duchess of Cambridge and her family members and friends during this incredibly difficult time, and certainly we wish her a full recovery.”

Jean-Pierre said it was important for the public to respect the privacy of the royal family, a remark that came after rampant speculation – especially online – about what was behind the low profile Catherine had been keeping.

The princess disclosed her cancer diagnosis and accompanying chemotherapy treatment in a video message the BBC recorded in the gardens of Windsor Castle.

She said the cancer was first discovered after she underwent major abdominal surgery in January.

Speculation about Catherine had intensified in recent months. After the princess marked Mother’s Day in the UK with a photo of her with her children – George, 10, Charlotte, eight, and Louis, five – major news organizations recalled distribution of the photograph, claiming it had been altered.

Catherine apologized for any “confusion” and said she had digitally edited the image herself.

In the video message, Catherine said she and Prince William had required time to explain her health situation to their sons and daughter.

“We hope you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment,” she said in the video. “My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery.”

The princess said she and William have told her children she is “going to be OK”.

“I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal – in my mind, body and spirits,” she said.

“At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone.”
