The White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, strongly criticized the Republican funding plan on Thursday. Jean-Pierre accused GOP members of Congress of prioritizing the interests of their wealthy donors over the needs of hardworking Americans.
In a statement, Jean-Pierre expressed disappointment in the Republicans for deviating from a bipartisan agreement that aimed to reduce prescription drug costs and prevent job outsourcing to China. Instead, the GOP proposed a bill that Jean-Pierre claimed would benefit billionaires through tax breaks while cutting essential programs that support working families, such as Social Security and Head Start.
The situation escalated when Republicans withdrew a bipartisan continuing resolution proposal following opposition from prominent figures like President-elect Donald Trump, Vice President-elect JD Vance, and billionaire Elon Musk, a close ally of Trump.
President Joe Biden has not yet publicly addressed the funding dispute. However, Jean-Pierre emphasized that the president stands behind the bipartisan agreement to ensure government operations continue, assist communities recovering from disasters, and lower expenses, rather than supporting the last-minute proposal that favors billionaires.
