Where you keep your air fryer could have an impact on how much it costs to run

Often, there is debate about where appliances should be kept in a kitchen, like do you keep your toaster in the press or on the counter.

While this doesn’t have a bearing on the effectiveness of the appliance, an expert has warned where you keep one popular cooking device in the kitchen could be costing you more money in the long run.

More and more kitchens across Ireland are switching to air fryers. Given they are ideal for cooking smaller meals and on average people can save up to 75 per cent on energy bills with some air fryers, they seem like the perfect low-cost cooking device.

However, the position of the appliance in your kitchen could have a bearing on the cost of running it, meaning you may as well have just used an oven.

Nicholas Auckland from Trade Radiators explained how placing your air fryer in the wrong place in a kitchen may result in considerably longer cooking times which in turn will use more electricity causing the handy appliance to become much less efficient.

Speaking to The Sun, the expert said: “Air fryers should be placed on heat-resistant kitchen countertops, and at least 13cm away from the wall and other appliances/items.

“This is because air fryers can reach temperatures of 200c inside, so they emit a lot of heat and need to be kept away from non-heat-resistant materials in order to prevent burning.”

However, where you keep your air fryer is not the only factor that can have an impact on the cost of running the handy convection heat cooking device that most kitchens have.

The expert added: “Other factors also play a big role in how efficiently your air fryer works.

“For example, it's important that you keep it clean, don't overcrowd food and ensure that you empty baskets and shelves properly."

This advice from Auckland comes just a short time after money guru Martin Lewis issued a usage warning to those swapping the oven for an air fryer or microwave.

Speaking on his podcast at the end of April he said that if you are thinking of ditching your oven for an air fryer, it comes down to an equation of what uses more energy and obviously, with an oven you have the need to heat it up beforehand.
