Met Eireann has issued a Status Orange weather warning for low temperatures and ice for Wednesday night, valid until December 15.
The warning outlined that there would be “widespread temperatures below -5 degrees leading to severe frost and ice”. Some areas look to be even colder overnight.
With that in mind, which areas in Ireland look set to be the coldest tonight?
Met Eireann’s forecast for tonight, December 14, said that some areas of the country could fall to as low as -8 or -9 in places by Thursday morning. The places affected will mostly be in Midland areas.
Using the national forecaster’s widget on their website homepage, we see that at 10pm tonight, temperatures across the country range from about 0 degrees Celsius to -7. Lowest temperatures can be seen in the likes of Longford, Offaly, parts of Galway and Cavan.
At the same time in other parts of the midlands, such as Roscommon, Kildare and parts of Clare and Limerick, temperatures will drop to -6.
Temperatures in Dublin will range from -2 and -4 at 10pm. In Cork, it will range from 0 and -1 around coastal areas, but drop to -2 further inland. It will range between 0 and -4 in Kerry and parts of Galway, while temperatures will stay above 0 in parts of Mayo. It will even hit 4 degrees in Belmullet.
However, into the early hours of Thursday morning is when the severe temperatures hit across the board.
At 5am on December 14, it will be -10 in Bruff, Co Limerick, Killyon, Co Offally and Kilbeggan and Castledaly, Co Westmeath. These extreme temperatures appear to remain in place until 10am on Thursday morning.
It will drop to -9 in Ledwithstown, Co Longford, Portumna, Co Galway and Nenagh, Co Tipperary.
Met Eireann has forecasted -8 degrees Celcius in the likes of Ballynoe West, Co Limerick, Thurles, Co Tipperary and Kildare.
In Dublin at 5am, temperatures range from -3 to -4. In Cork at this time, the coast is once again a few degrees warmer than the rest of the county, ranging from -1 to -3. Inland, it will be about -5 to -6. It will be about 0 to -3 degrees Celsius in Kerry.
Temperatures in Galway will range from about 0 and -7, mostly halting at -3.
Overall, it is going to be an extremely cold night in Ireland, with most areas falling to about -5 or -6 throughout the night.
