The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday (January 24), and a handful of films have dominated the headlines since. One such film is Martin McDonagh’s tragicomedy The Banshees of Inisherin, which picked up a whopping nine nominations – including for Best Film.
The universally acclaimed film, set on a remote island off the coast of Ireland, follows Pádraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson), two lifelong friends who suddenly find themselves at an impasse when Colm unexpectedly puts an end to their friendship. A stunned Padraic attempts to repair their relationship with the help of his sister Siobhan (Kerry Condon) and troubled young islander Dominic (Barry Keoghan).
But Padraic’s repeated efforts only strengthen his former friend’s resolve, and when Colm delivers a desperate ultimatum, events swiftly escalate with alarming consequences. Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon each earned nods for their supporting roles, while writer-director McDonagh – also known for 2008 hit In Bruges – picked up a nomination for best director and best original screenplay. The film was also nominated for best original score and best editing.
