Where Susan Boyle is now- glam ex-council house, Irish cousins and healed brother rift

It's been 13 years since Susan Boyle first hit our screens.

The Scottish singer left audiences gobsmacked when she auditioned for Britain's Got Talent back in 2009, with her first appearance being on April 11.

Susan, who stunned judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan with her initial performance of 'I Dreamed A Dream', would go all the way to the final of the competition.

She would lose out to dance troupe Diversity, but gained a chart-topping album in the aftermath.

In the last few years, she has stepped back from the public spotlight - but she's been a busy bee behind the scenes.

She lost weight

The star battled to give up chocolate and sweets after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Sweet-toothed Susan said at the time: “I need to stop eating sweeties and cakes. It’s the bane of my life.”

By 2013 she had lost two stone after being told by doctors to lose weight for the sake of her health. She is reportedly now managing her condition by taking tablets daily.

She has Irish cousins!

During an appearance on the RTE Late Late Show in 2012, Susan explained to host Ryan Tubridy that she had Irish cousins.

"I was up visiting people in Donegal, I've got a few cousins up there on my mother's side, the McLoughlins.

"I was visiting a friend in Buncrana and I met a load of them and they were very nice."

Susan continued to explain how her mother wanted her to be a professional singer, but that she never believed that she had a chance.

"I used to escape from the house and go to the Happy Valley pub to sneak in every Thursday when I was in my 20s. I felt then that I could do something when I got a round of applause"

She pimped her ex-council house

Despite having enough money to buy a mansion if she wanted, Susan refused to move out of her own ex-council property in her native Blackburn, West Lothian.

Instead, she bought the house next door, paying €120,000 for the semi-detached house and merging them together to create her ultra-glam dream home.

The Scottish personality previously explained that her home holds a lot of memories which is why she couldn't bear to move out.

Susan told OK! : "It’s to do with the memories of your house and your upbringing, you need to take stock of things and maybe see where you come from and where your roots lie."

She added: "It’s best to be grounded and with your roots. It keeps you grounded and prevents you from saying things maybe you shouldn't say."

She made up with her brother

Susan and her brother Gerry had a massive row in December 2013, when other family members claimed he'd threatened to take his own life if she didn’t give him €60,000.

The allegations split the once close-knit family and Gerry was outraged when Susan refused to cut ties with those behind the rumours.

The siblings spent two and a half years not speaking. But they finally buried the hatchet in 2016 after Susan had a row with staff at Heathrow airport and called Gerry in a state of distress.

He frantically called her back, and Susan took a taxi straight to his home.

Gerry later said: “Within five minutes, it was like we’d never been apart. It has been great to pick up the pieces.”
