The Indianapolis Colts are hoping to usher in a new era of football highlighted by the arrival of first-year head coach Shane Steichen and electric rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson.
It’s always an exciting time when an organization invests in a new quarterback/head coach duo during an offseason, and the possibilities seem endless.
As CBS Sports ranked the 11 new pairs from the 2023 offseason, here’s a look at where they put the duo of Richardson and Steichen:
7. Colts: Anthony Richardson (QB)*, Shane Steichen (HC)*
Texans fans may rebel at the suggestion that Richardson, a much less refined passer than Stroud, deserves higher billing. But elite mobility goes such a long way at QB (see: Justin Fields keeping the Bears far more competitive than expected in 2022), and Steichen, his boss, excelled at growing Jalen Hurts’ once-iffy arm in Philadelphia.
There was no better fit for Richardson in the draft than the Colts because of Steichen. Not only is the latter’s history working with various quarterback archetypes notable, but he may also have found his secret success working with Hurts as the true, dual-threat talent.
Considering the fact that Richardson only has 13 collegiate starts under his belt, there will be a road of development ahead of the 21-year-old.
But the sky is the limit for this duo as long as they continue to make progress, and there was no better fit for the incoming rookie quarterback than with Steichen.
